King County Library System (KCLS) in Washington State is seeking a community-oriented and enthusiastic Teen Services Librarian to provide service to the North region of King County libraries, which includes four unique community libraries serving the cities and surrounding neighborhoods of Kirkland, Bothell and Kenmore.

The Teen Services Librarian position performs a variety of professional in-library, out-of-library, and online programs and services in support of teens, caregivers, families, schools and other organizations serving children and teens in the assigned region. This position provides assistance with basic and in-depth technological and informational assistance by phone, in-person and in outreach locations. This position also participates in selection and maintenance of KCLS materials in their region to meet the unique educational, recreational, and information needs of the community.

The successful candidate will:

  1. Cultivate strong collaborative relationships with colleagues across KCLS and in the larger community, developing and delivering programs and services which reflect the unique needs of the diverse population served.
  2. Demonstrate respect and support of diversity and inclusion of cultural values, and continually develop cultural awareness and understanding of self and others.
  3. Understand theories of infant, child, and adolescent learning, literacy and brain development, and their implications for public library service.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:
Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents, however, and do not include all specific tasks an incumbent may be expected to perform.
  • Creates, develops, directs and delivers relevant services and programs.
  • Engages with the community and special population groups through multiple delivery methods. Promotes the use of materials, services and programs to the community.
  • Participates in community activities by providing information, answering questions and discussing community needs for services. Represents the Library and makes public presentations.
  • Identifies and stays current with KCLS service areas and understands their informational needs and interests. Plans and organizes information for use by unique population groups. Identifies future needs and trends for information services.
  • Provides and responds to in-depth readers' advisory, informational and specialty service questions. Provides depth of knowledge in specialty area or skill set such as children's, teen and adult services. Assists and educates patrons in the use of library technology resource.
  • Promotes, educates and supports Intellectual Freedom principles with staff and patrons. Resolves related concerns or redirects to appropriate source.
  • Mentors, trains, and models for other staff. Under direction of Supervising Librarian, works closely with the Public Service Assistant (PSA) position to ensure excellence in informational and readers' advisory services.
  • Creates and provides relevant and timely communications.
  • Participates in collection development and maintenance activities.
Secondary Duties:
  • Initiates, participates and collaborates in the library profession beyond KCLS. Maintains professional expertise in order to provide relevant public service.
  • Initiates, participates and collaborates with KCLS staff on projects and committees.
  • Participates in activities such as staff meetings, committee work and trainings.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Desired Minimum Qualification

Education/Experience:

  • Master's of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited school of Librarianship and Washington State certification as a Librarian is required.
  • Evidence of training, experience, or study in a relevant functional area.
Necessary Knowledge, Ability and Skills:
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of reference sources, authors, literature, publishers and publications.
  • Knowledge of search strategies and classification systems.
  • Knowledge of services, programs and materials available in public libraries.
  • Knowledge of patron needs and interests.
  • Knowledge of assigned specialty service.
  • Knowledge and support of the principles of Intellectual Freedom.
Ability to:
  • Clearly, succinctly, and effectively communicate ideas and thoughts, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse population in library, online and in community settings.
  • Adapt to changing needs, recognize and set priorities, and plan, coordinate and organize own work.
  • Use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with patrons and staff.
  • Operate with a minimum of supervision and work collaboratively in a team environment to find solutions to problems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly using hands to grasp objects, frequently finger/keyboarding. The employee will frequently stand and walk and reach up to chest level with hands and arms and up to frequently will bend. Occasionally squats, kneels and sits on floor and will seldom crawl. The employee will frequently lift/carry 10 pounds, occasionally up to 20 pounds and seldom up to 50 pounds and up to frequently push/pull carts using light force.

Work Environment
Performs job in a library or community setting with some hectic or demanding situations. It includes work at a PC monitor. Extended periods of standing are required in some instances. Job involves working a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends, which may change periodically. Encounters situations that involve behavioral issues. Position involves frequent interruptions with maximum flexibility required.

Employees working 20 hours per week or more can set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay annually for up to $2,500 in family medical expenses and up to $5,000 in child care needs.  KCLS provides annual employer contribution to Heath Saving Account.
 
Life and Accidental Death Insurance
All the employees working 20 hours per week or more qualify for the group term life insurance benefit equal to one times their annual salary. In addition employees working 40 hours receive long-term insurance.
