Rate this book
Jaded New York City Public Defender Liana Cohen would give anything to have one client in whom she can believe. Her boyfriend Jakob’s high-powered law firm colleagues see her do-gooder job as a joke, which only adds to the increasing strain in their relationship.

Enter imprisoned felon Danny Shea, whose unforgivable crime would raise a moral conflict in an attorney at the height of her idealism―and that hasn't been Liana in quite a while. But Danny's astonishing blend of good looks, intelligence, and vulnerability intrigues Liana. Could he be the client she’s been longing for―the wrongly accused in need of a second chance? I enjoyed this one! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Liana Cohen is a public defender in New York City. She is feeling jaded these days. While she was once hopeful and working with purpose, she has seen the worst sides of people repeatedly and heard all the lies.

She’s also dating Jakob, an attorney at a fancy law firm, and his coworkers look down on Liana’s public defender job.

Danny Shea enters Liana’s professional life as a felon. His crime is one that would get under anyone’s skin. But then again, what if Danny is innocent? Liana is hopeful this may be her chance to overturn a wrongful conviction.

And then Liana and Danny’s relationship crosses some lines, which leaves Liana questioning everything.

Unreasonable Doubts is such a fresh and personal take on a legal thriller. Liana felt genuine and real from the start, and I appreciated her honesty with her work. I’ve always wondered how public defenders and other defense attorneys can do their jobs if they ever doubt their clients. Liana’s character offered insight into just that.

The author also did an amazing job with Danny’s characterization. I just plain loved this story. It was well-told, intriguing, and while there was all this mixed-up emotion in the beginning, I was left with positive feelings in the end, and I love that.

Incidentally, the author worked as a defense lawyer. She knows of what she writes, and I think that added weight to the authenticity here.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

Reyna Marder Gentin has constructed an intricate thought provoking story. The perfect mash up of a legal thriller and women’s fiction peppered with some romance. Have you ever thought how hard it would be to defend someone you thought was guilty? How about fighting for somebody you knew was innocent? And what happens when the lines get blurred and human emotion comes into play? Leanna is a defense attorney. Her boyfriend Jacob is working at a high power law firm where his colleagues see Leanna as a “do gooder“. When Leanna takes a case defending Danny Shay she begins to question everything.

Leanna was an intriguing and interesting character. We really were privy to her internal struggle as she tried to figure out what kind of life she wanted to live. The courtroom scenes in this book were fascinating and realistic. The romance was compelling and complicated. This is one intense story that will truly make you think.

This was defiantly not your boring legal thriller. The courtroom scenes were anything but boring. It had so many great elements to the story. The romance and the deciding what to do with her life. The story was unforgettable. I hope to get to read more of Gentin's books. I gave this book 4 stars and I recommend this one.

I received an ARC of this fantastic debut novel from Reyna Marder Gentin.

First, I have to say: when I finished the novel I was in tears, and Gentin leaves just enough confusion about her mystery that different readers may draw different conclusions about what really happened. So - go on! I hope I've whetted your appetite to discover for yourself the truth of what happened

Liana, a public defender, is having a tough time. At work, she's lost her idealism and has given up hope of finding that one innocent defendant. In her personal life, her long-term relationship with Jakob, an ambitious legal associate, is suffering from his work commitments and her doubts. Danny Shea's case lands on her desk in the midst of all this and suddenly she has someone to fight for again.

This is a bit of an oversimplification of the book, because the suspense / emotion related to the Danny Shea case is only one part of the story. The other part is about Liana's personal relationships and what happens to them - and to her - over the ensuing months.

The book fits into multiple genres: legal thriller, women's fiction, romance. It's a slow burn, but tight: Gentin uses every detail she introduces. Her personal knowledge of the legal field comes through with digestible facts and riveting - yet believable - trial transcripts that read like a conversation. Liana's relationships are carefully revealed and tested, with conclusions that are touching, tragic, romantic, and ultimately lead to personal growth. You'll be cheering for Liana in the end not because of who she was on page 1 but who she is by the end of the novel, and how she has learned to be truthful with herself, supportive of those she loves, and accepting of both herself and others, foibles included.

Highly recommend!

Legal Suspense just might be my new favorite genre!

I’m surprised how few books I’ve read that fall into this category… because I seem to love the few that I’ve read… including this one!

I found this one to be so captivating and a really fun and intense read. I don’t think I could ever be in any sort of legal profession, because this is me: “Oh, he’s totally guilty!” then “No, wait, totally innocent!” and then “I have no idea WHAT this guy is!”

That was totally me reading Unreasonable Doubts. Doubting everything – always. And Liana seems to be doing a bit of the same! She’s a NYC public defender, has a fantastic boyfriend and a seemingly great life… but there are definitely some doubts.

Does she still want to do this difficult job? Is Jakob the one? And will this new case that falls into her lap, finally help her figure out what she wants in life? Or will it be the thing that destroys her?
There are SO many themes in this that I really enjoyed and all seemed to seamlessly blend into a really interesting story – love, friendship, questions of faith, and a quest for the truth and what that really means – along with a really intriguing legal case!

Lindas Book Obsession Reviews “Unreasonable Doubts” by Reyna Marder Gentin She Writes Press, November 13, 2018

Reyna Marder Gentin, Author of “Unreasonable Doubts” has written an intense, intriguing, captivating, suspenseful and riveting novel that is extremely thought-provoking. The Genres for this book are Legal Suspense, and Fiction. The timeline for his book are in the present and go to the past or future only when it pertains to the events or characters in this story. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated.

Liana Cohen is a Public Defender that has mixed feelings now when dealing with the legal cases she has to represent. She deals with hardened criminals. rapists, murders and is starting to lose the enthusiasm that every person is innocent until they are proven guilty. Liana’s boyfriend Jacob, is working his way up the ladder in a successful law firm. Jacob’s colleagues refer to Liana as the “do-gooder”. Why is Liana so confused at this point in time?

One of Liana’s co-workers gives her a case of Danny Shea, who is in prison for rape. When Liana reads Danny’s letters, something in her makes her want to give him a second chance. Often as a Public Defender, the best form of attack is to find some mistake in the process from the first trial. Soon Liana becomes obsessed with this case. Is she in danger?

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy legal suspense novels that offer so much more. There are twists and turns and surprises in this story. Happy Reading!!

This could be categorized as a legal thriller but its so much more. It's a book about love and friendship and trying to decide what's really important in life. This is a debut novel for this author and based on this book, I expect that we'll see many more fantastic books from her in the future.

Liana is a Public Defender in NYC. Even though she was offered a job at a prestigious NY law firm, she felt the need to go to work at the public defender's office where she could help people unable to afford legal representation. After several years on her job, Liana is starting to lose her idealism as she continues to see repeat offenders and hardened criminals. Her boyfriend works at a high level law firm and is completely consumed trying to make partner and doesn't seem to realize that he and Liana are heading in totally different directions regarding their future. As a new case grabs all of Liana's attention (maybe too much), it forces her to take a close look at her life and decide what's really important.

Legal thrillers can sometimes be very dry and boring during the court parts of the story but the author is able to make it all interesting. Beyond being a legal thriller this is a love story and a real coming of age story for Liana as she struggles to decide her future.

Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

Reyna Marder Gentin brings us into a world that isn't often seen-- the offices of lawyers who do the work of appealing court decisions, to make sure that the lawyers got it right the first time. The protagonist, Liana, chooses the lesser-paying socially responsible job and finds herself wondering if she's actually doing any good for anyone. It's a compelling story because Gentin certainly seems to know the ins and outs of this world well and Liana is a character I cheered for. The court case that challenges her the most is complex because it's very much about the people whose lives are affected by the wheels of justice turning in a fair direction. To that end, Gentin delivers an unforgettable story where Liana's very humanity as a woman is part of her job as they try to convince her of their innocence. Fascinating and speaks to what we're capable of as human beings and the slippery nuances of our justice system.

This legal thriller that keeps you on your toes is wonderfully warm and real. What a beautiful mix: a fast pace with a sense of danger and suspense and the life issues of a young woman questioning her work, her love life, her friendships. I read Unreasonable Doubts over the Thanksgiving weekend and loved the characters. The book is smart. There's a wise rabbi, too, which made me think of the Rabbi Small mysteries. Add to these a New York setting and the misery and fun of Mets' baseball.

I really enjoyed the writing style and the characters in this book. It was an easy story to get caught up in with just enough lawyer, court room talk to keep it interesting. I felt that there was a lot of build up (more than half of the book) before it hit a peak. I loved that the main character was Jewish and enjoyed reading about the different traditions she observed.

First of all I want to say thank you to Caitlin Hamilton Summie for the Advanced Readers Copy of Unreasonable Doubts written by Reyna Marder Gentin that I won through the Novel Bee group on Facebook!

Can’t say too much without giving away important details about the book but I loved it. I originally thought the book was a little overwhelming with so many law terms but it quickly grew on me. I couldn’t wait to see what Liana would do or say next. It’s comforting to read a book with a strong female protagonist who doubts and questions herself. Like a lot of women, Liana has to make a lot of wrong choices before she makes the right one.

On a personal note, I can relate to Liana and why she was having a crisis of conscious regarding her job and relationships because I’ve done the same on several occasions. She’s also lost her father (3 years in the book) and it’s been almost 2 for myself. Having to deal with losing a parent all while learning how to battle your own demons is quite a challenge. I even teared up the end. Great book!

I reviewed an advance review copy (ARC) of this book—and wow, just wow!

It works on so many levels. It’s a legal thriller. It’s a mystery-suspense. It’s romance. It’s part workplace comedy. It’s part personal tragedy. It’s uplifting. It’s earth shattering.

The story is about a public defender, Liana Cohen, an idealist who has given up a high-paying job at a cushy firm to contribute to the public good. But after a few years on the job, Liana questions whether she’s actually doing any good.

This existential crisis leads her down a path that puts her job, her love life, her life and everything she’s ever believed in in jeopardy. I won’t tell you what happens, but the ending will surprise you and make you question whether you’re too much like Liana, or make you worry that you might be too different.

Wonderful debut novel! I can’t wait to read the author’s next one.

“Unreasonable Doubts” is an intelligently written novel by Reyna Marder Gentin that somewhat chronicles a year in the life of New York City public defender Liana Cohen as she endeavors to find true meaning in work, relationships, and self.

What I thought would be a stereo-typical “lawyer novel” was more in-depth regarding the life and relationships of the lead character Liana Cohen. The focus of the novel wasn’t only the court case of Jennifer Nash vs Daniel Shea, although important. As the novel opens we meet Liana at a time in her life when she is pushing thirty and strongly questioning her place in the world, trying to mesh faith, work, and love.

Liana is an Ivy League graduate with a handsome and successful boyfriend, Jakob, an apartment in an upscale neighborhood, and by everyone’s standards, a great job. However, her discontent is evident, at least to her co-workers. To spend one’s life essentially looking for ways to help criminals win their appeals is no longer appealing to Liana. She has lost the hope of finding and helping that one truly innocent client and making a tangible difference in the life of someone let down by the “system.”

When it looks like making her quota is an impossibility, Liana’s friend and co-worker Deb hands her the case that may just change everything. Daniel Shea is not your ordinary criminal and his case proves to be anything but routine. He is articulate, intelligent, engaging, and, not least of all, Calvin Klein-model gorgeous. A combination that does not pair well with Liana’s already present disillusionment. Liana decides to throw everything she has into this case in the hopes that Danny Shea is the one true innocent in a sea of guilty clients.

Will this case be the game-changer she hopes? As she researches for the upcoming appeal, learns of a dear friend’s illness and tries to figure out where exactly she fits into Jakob’s completely packed schedule, we see Liana struggle with what most of us face as we get older and our lives change. Growing up is hard, plain and simple. Learning whom to trust is hard. Figuring out whom you should not trust, is exceptionally hard.

“Unreasonable Doubts” by Reyna Marder Gentin has some truly fantastic elements. The writing is great, and the characters flow well with the story. I would have loved a little more history on the character of Daniel Shea, however I can see why the author chose to leave some mystery there. There is something in this story for everyone, and if you are like I was, the ending is going to be worth the wait.

This was out of my usual orbit, but I was easily on board from the opening page. The plot involves an appellate attorney and her vacillating perspective on her client. It was an intriguing premise, as I’ve always wondered how lawyers manage to represent guilty clients. The author has practiced as an appellate attorney for many years, and this background rendered a story which rang true. The protagonist, Liana, is in a serious relationship, about which she has varying doubts. Both she and her boyfriend are Jewish, and there is a bit too much detail about their faith and practices for my taste, although the Rabbi does offer timely council. . The client, Danny Shea, is charming, and surprisingly articulate. As the plot unfolds, Liana feels increasingly unsettled about her future with Jakob, while Danny looms as an ever puzzling contrast. Some romance and subtly mounting suspense combine to yield a very readable yarn.

Reyna's debut novel has a wonderful plot line and the characters are so well development. I learned a lot about the appeals court that was very interesting. A great blend of friendship, romance and thriller. I think this would make a great bookclub book as there is so much to discuss.

I’ll be honest. I didn’t know what to think of this novel when I first started it. It was a little slow for me. But, I pushed on and wow! I’m so glad I did! This went from a slow start to a fast paced, roller coaster thriller in the turn of a page.

Liana Cohen’s character really comes to life. Watching her indecision with Danny and his imprisonment really kept the suspense alive for me. I found myself staying up long into the early morning to finish this. By the end, I felt like I was on a roller coaster of epic proportions!

I definitely recommend this read to all psych thriller lovers. There’s thrilling suspense and some romance to keep it spiced up and the ultimate test of truth. Worthy of 4 stars from this reader! I can’t wait to read another thrilling novel by this talented author.

Reyna Marder Gentin's debut novel, Unreasonable Doubts, is terrific! Gentin builds up the suspense so well, as she examines a critical moment in the life of Liana, a young public defender. The allure and the danger inherent in her appeal of client Danny Shea's case are palpable, and the resolution is surprising yet entirely satisfying. The sprinkling of Jewish culture and teachings was great, and the subplot involving her friend Deb is very moving. Lots to think about when you finish. I recommend highly!

I so enjoyed this legal thriller debut novel by the author. The writing is so well crafted and fast paced i look forward to further books by the author . The author writes of charcters with such depth that I was drawn into each person in the story. Thank you for the ARC which does not influence my review.

Liana is a Public Defender in NYC so its not wonder after several years on her job she has lost her interest in the criminals she deals with on a repeat basis. She is contemplating a life change when a new case crosses her desk and subsequently changes her ideals and her life. She connects with the defendant and takes on his case with a vengeance to prove his innocence. She soon discovers that mistakes may have occurred at his first trial and she proceeds determined to prove his innocence.

In the meantime her boyfriend is a high powered attorney on the fast track to partner . Their differing ideals take them on different paths. He does not respect her values or ideals and his friends ridicule her choice of legal work. At the same time she is struggling with her self over the possible decision to leave her job or continue as she considers leaving her relationship . She connects with a Rabbi for advice who is a wonderful addition to the story. I loved learning more about the Jewish religion and how important it is to Liana.
This was a extraordinary book as a debut for the author. Its very well written and heartfelt. I so appreciate the opportunity to read this book.

Liana, the protagonist, started her professional career path as an idealist. Sounds like a difficult stance in the Public Defender’s Office writing briefs for the appeal of convictions. This seems even more problematic when these briefs are for defendants who have been found guilty of horrible, perhaps heinous crimes. It is Liana’s job to find the courtroom error, the loophole, the miscue, the misrepresentation or lack of competent counsel which would entitle these convicted defendants to a new trial. But Liana is no longer drinking the “Kool-Aid” preached by her boss and has lost her compassion and quite possibly her interest in her job.

Along comes a spider, his name is Danny Shea. His case has been assigned to Deb, her friend and colleague, who is so behind on her caseload that she has had his file for over seven months and not been able to get to it. Deb challenges Liana to take his case as a test for Liana’s “all business, no empathy methodology.” This is where things get very sticky. Liana is about to make the biggest mistake of her legal career, her personal life and just about everything else. Got your attention?

There is much to like about this book. The love aspect and relationship between Liana and her boyfriend Jakob reads true. The legal arguments are strong and interesting. The exploration of underpaid morally committed public defenders vis-à-vis corporate lawyers and the rigors of being a part of the world of billable hours are given a hard look and compared. The references to religious rituals, traditions and sense of community pushed the envelope just a bit but it did allow the author to insert an interesting and sympathetic character who I would love to know and have in my life.

From her bio Gentin obviously writes from first-hand experience. This is a strong debut and I look forward to her future writing. Thank you NetGalley and She Writes Press for an ARC.

I received an early copy of Unreasonable Doubts and almost immediately was transported back to my 20's, life in New York City, starting out on a career path, and contemplating both large and small questions about the meaning of work and love and religion and what it means to be an adult. Marder Gentin elegantly weaves all of these elements into a compelling story filled with intelligence, nuanced characters, and an unsettling mystery. The legal sections are general enough for all readers to understand, but detailed enough to fascinate readers of all backgrounds. I loved how real the book felt, from the workplace politics, to the scenes with family, and of course, the protagonist's dangerous fascination with her client. This is a perfect addition to a book club's reading list, as the book poses deep questions about believing in one's profession and what constitutes a suitable romantic partner. It's a fast read, but one that stays with you for a long time. Looking forward to more books from this talented writer!

Liana, a public-defender, is tasked with navigating how to reconcile passions of work, heart, and professional ambition. What unfolds is a tight page-turner from start to finish. In her debut, Gentin morphs a tantalizing legal thriller with romance and Judaism to create a wholesome-feeling novel that turns out to be a great beach-read but anything but cheaply played. It's relatable, interesting, and accentuates the gray-areas of our emotional arcs.

With deft and clarity, Gentin's work addresses the following big questions in small instances-
To what degree should we listen to ourselves or heed the voices of others? How do we know we are ready to marry someone? What does it mean to be a good friend?

I especially appreciated the author's restraint. With limited 3rd person, we, along with Liana, question as to why Shea left her on the bed unscathed.

One thing is, Liana's chief complain about Jakob doesn't seem to be allayed prior to her deciding to marry him. It also didn't seem convincing in the epilogue that Jakob is suddenly prioritizing Liana 10-fold more and learning about an entirely new sport and team for which he was previously uninterested.

Some great entertainment and thought-provoking material. All the best to all those PD's out there fighting for capital J-Justice among such corporate haters.
