The Sea Prayers

Rate this book
A waitress, a megastar, and an ex-addict wage war for the heart of a young girl.

Thirteen years ago, a spiked drink left Agnes with a permanent reminder of the man who date-raped her.

Her daughter looks like him, sounds like him, and even listens to his platinum records (of course, the dude's a mega star because nothing is fair) but Brisa is everything Agnes has in the world. At least, she is until the day this music star sets his sights on getting himself a ready-made family.

He's got millions of dollars, millions of fans, a high-powered legal team, and half Brisa's DNA. Agnes has a run-down house, a friend who's almost three years sober and afraid to say he loves her, and a lawyer willing to work pro bono.

Oh, and the whole town of Beaufort. That's right. She's got all those Beaufort folk at her back, praying to the God she has rejected, and not one of them is going to let Brisa go without a fight.

Normandie had the best of several worlds: a Southern heritage, access to schooling in the DC area (which meant lots of cultural adventures), and several years of sculpture studies in Italy. It might have been better for her if she'd used all these opportunities more wisely, but it's possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

She writes Southern women's fiction and romantic suspense from her waterfront base in coastal North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, her aging mother, two dogs and two cats.

It's such a delight when you take a chance on a new-to-you author and the book clicks with you in a way where you're a bonafide fan by the middle and looking for more chances to read their books.

The Sea Prayers is southern Christian fiction set in a small town in coastal Carolina. The other southern fiction I've read wasn't this Christian, so right away, I loved that about this author.

The characters were endearing and my heart went out to them, so my faith was challenged when theirs was. Normandie Fischer doesn't just give you a good faith message in the conclusion of the character arc- she asks a lot of questions along the way, deep, thought provoking questions, with thoughtful answers. There are no stereotypes, just believable characters with many layers. I was impressed.

And then... the end. I'm still not totally sure what I think about the end, but while it's not everything I was hoping for, it did strike me as realistic. I didn't love how much Henry had to grovel, but I think he would have been shown more grace if the person would have been more familiar with it themselves.
I assume there will be a bit more closure in the next book, since it's a series. Regardless, I've had to wrestle a bit through how things ended, and I think I'm okay with it, but I don't want to say why because of spoilers. ;)

I received a complimentary copy of this book through the JustReads tour, but I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

The Sea Prayers is a powerful, emotionally-taut book that will touch your heart and fill your soul. Told from three points of view: Agnes, a single mom struggling to make ends meet, still pained by the rape that resulted in the birth of her daughter; Henry, a former addict; and Darlington, a singing superstar, who is also the father of Agnes' daughter, Brisa. As these three lives intersect, we are given an intimate look into their fears, their celebrations, their insecurities, their doubts, their faith. This book lifted my spirits, even in the dark moments, as the characters grew and evolved; I rejoiced with them, I wept with them, I feared for them.

This book was my introduction to author Normandie Fischer. The book sounded interesting, so I gave it a try and I'm glad I did! While this was my first book of Ms. Fischer's, it won't be the last! This story is in the Carolina Coast series, but I actually didn't realize it was part of a series, so it definitely works well as a stand-alone. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not having read the other books first.

This book follows the story of Agnes, a single mother whose past comes back to haunt her at the same time that she is dealing with issues surrounding the inheritance she received from her estranged mother. The story also follows Henry, who finds himself in love with Agnes, but his own past stands in the way of him doing anything about that. The other vantage point is of Darling, a megastar whose selfish lifestyle turns Agnes's world completely upside down - both in the past and the present.

This book tackles several difficult topics, such as rape and addiction and does so with grace. While the book is a romance as there is some focus on the love story developing between Agnes and Henry, the stronger story line is that of redemption and forgiveness. Henry, Agnes, and Darling all have past issues with their parents that are addressed and overcome. The character development of all 3 of them is vast and very well done. It was a beautiful redemptive story with a satisfying ending.

Special thanks to the author for an ecopy of this book. I was not obligated to write a review. The opinions contained within are my own.

Ms. Fischer has woven yet another wonderful story into the fabric of her Coastal Carolina Series. It is a story of a single mother’s heartbreak that begins when her child discovers the secret of a father she has never known, and ends with a battle she never expected to fight. It includes the struggle of a man recovering not only from his addiction, but the scars of his childhood, and his reliance on God for both his sobriety and his self-worth. It follows a misguided megastar who returns to his roots and finally realizes the true meaning of love. The friendship, faith and prayers of the characters in this tightly knit coastal community bring about unexpected changes in hearts, lessons of forgiveness, and a happiness that only God can provide. For those that love both suspense and a heart smile, this book is a must read!

Normandie Fischer is one of my favorite authors, and this may be her best book yet. I loved Agnes and Henry. Both flawed but sympathetic people. And the daughter was realistic and well-crafted. I highly recommend this story

The Sea Prayer, written by Normandie Fischer, is yet another great addition to this series!

I was sucked in on page one! The ever-ready friends in Beaufort, NC are once again in this wonderful story, but with new interaction with the main characters.

Agnes is a strong woman. Dealing with so much in her life except her relationship with the Creator.

Hen...What a guy! I wasn't sure if I was going to like him becuase he has a deep past...just like most people. He has things he is ever fighting to prove to himself and others.

Fischers books take you right to the core of a situation, no holds barred. It's not always pretty or wrapped in a bow. Issues are addressed with characters and solutions aren't always the easy way out. Totally recommend!

I was given an ARC of this book by the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own.

What an exciting read! Fischer takes us back to Beaufort, NC in this book, as she tells the story of a single mom barely making ends meet, and her daughter, who learns a huge secret about the dad she's never met: he’s a famous singer and she listens to his music all the time.

There's a sous chef who has overcome addiction and lives on a boat, an inherited house that requires more than the recipient can handle, and a town filled with people who know how to be the hands and feet of God. Date rape, emotional abuse, unforgiveness, and a missing child provide lots of conflict, plot twists, and reasons for our heroine to learn how to pray.

This is a love story, a faith story, and a family story. It’s about the past coming back to bite you, and learning how to make sure the future doesn’t run away without you.

I highly recommend Fischer’s latest installment in her Carolina Coast Series. This story definitely stands on its own, but if you’ve already met the lovely people from her other novels, you will enjoy it even more when several of them pop in for a cameo in this storyline too.

I effortlessly slipped into Ms. Fischer’s The Sea Prayers as I would slide into blissful warm waters. The story is full of southern charm even though it moves right along. The unpredictable plot kept me turning pages. And the scene with Darlington and Mama Bea is great! It’s such a comfort to run into folk from Beaufort again: Tadie, Miss Rita, and Clay. Wouldn’t I just love to know good people like that and have them as my friends. The afterword promises readers another Carolina Coast novel, and I wonder if we’ll also see more of Father Stanley and Jeminy. I look forward to checking back in on Agnes, Brisa, and Henry to see how they’re doing.

Fischer covers a lot of hard topics in this novel, and I think they are topics that can speak to several different kinds of readers. She doesn't sugar coat anything, and I appreciate that she stays true to real life in this way. The unsaved act as such, and she doesn't hide that in the story. There were moments I did kind of want to look away for a moment, but reminded myself who the character was. Mostly Darlington. I did not like his character at all, and for good reason. He was all the things I hope to never be. But the truth is, things like this do happen in real life, and we need stories about it.

I liked the aspect of community Fischer built in this novel. A community that has your back. Sticks together. Almost Hallmarkesque if you will. I found it sweet and uplifting to read. It broke up the darker parts of the book. As did our sweet Henry. Sure, he had some issues he was dealing with, but deep down he was just a good guy.

I think for some readers the POV from Darlington may be a little hard to read, and I get that. For me, it was just kind of like getting the inside look at what someone else is thinking, their motives, and pointing out who they truly were. This would be a book I would recommend after first having a conversation about what you'll find inside (no spoilers of course, just sensitive topics people may feel uncomfortable reading). I think it would provide hope to those who need it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another awesome novel from Normandie Fischer! It's got all the things you love: broken people who are striving toward a better life, sailboats, romance, and an abiding sense of hope.

Agnes is a struggling single parent who still struggles with the ghosts left behind by her mother. Henry is a recovering addict who's not just taking it one day at a time, but sometimes one minute at a time. And Brisa is Agnes's tweenage daughter who's always wished she had a father, and then discovers every dream coming true when her father does swoop into town: a music star with more money than Bill Gates and a plan to sweep her off her feet.

This isn't a billionaire romance. No. Because he's a rapist and a cad, and he wants a daughter the same way most people want a Porsche or a new purebred puppy.

You can see the setup for disaster here. It's a really good story, and I highly recommend it!

This is my first book by this author and honestly I didn't know what to expect. Although this follows a series I have been told it can be read as a stand alone and honestly I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not reading the others.

Let me start by saying that if you are in a place emotionally that can't handle a book that is completely in your face then don't pick this one up just yet. Also it does have some possible triggers for those that may have experienced rape. This story deals with the aftereffects of such an occurrence and although I felt like the author was very tactful about it, it was not something that I was ready for. There are parts of the story in which the author perhaps was trying to give us both sides of the story as far as the Christian side and the non-Christian side but at times I felt like that was a bit much. Now, I can see how some people may like these parts and see them as a tool for those who aren't Christian to relate to a story, and I totally get that and I feel like some books do need that, but for me in this storyline it was bit too much. The end left me hanging and although I was not expecting it to be all "rainbows and butterflies" it definitely felt like the story was not complete.

That being said, you can tell that the author is obviously passionate about her story and what she is trying to convey through it. If you enjoy stories that are in your face then I definitely recommend this one.

I didn’t realize until I started reading this book that the last book I read, Shoal Waters, was the sequel to this one. I guess that shows how well the books in this series can stand alone! I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this book at the beginning, since I already knew that Agnes and Darling had become friends, but what I didn’t know was how that worked out. Agnes did not trust Darling, and for good reason, since he had date-raped her. Was it even possible for him to change? Could the two ever come to any kind of agreement about their daughter—or would Agnes lose the only person she had left?
There are multiple references to s*x, both the original rape and in Darling’s current relationship. There are also more descriptions of kisses than I like to read in a book, but at the same time I appreciated the picture of a former addict learning to walk with God, and a broken woman learning to trust God. There is somewhat of a mystery/issue to be resolved throughout the book, which kept me reading as fast as I could to find out how it was solved—even though I knew, from reading the next book, that it had been!

I received a review copy of this book from the author, and these are my honest thoughts about it.

The Sea Prayers by Normandie Fischer is part of the Carolina Coastal series. I have read one other book in this series and I really want to read more.

I was captivated by this storyline from the very beginning. Agnes is a Single Mom to 13yr old Brisa and though she struggles to provide for Brisa, Brisa is all she has. The moment Agnes discovers Brisa knows who her Dad is, that is when Agnes begins to realize she needs Brisa always. I really LOVE how the author introduces the other main characters in the book. Henry lives with Agnes and is an ex-addict. Agnes would love to see him show love to her. Darlington, Brisa's father, is a Rock Star who has decided he wants to be a part of Brisa's life. I LOVE how the whole town comes to support Agnes and Brisa to make sure she stays in Beaufort. The author addresses some Sensitive topics in this book, including Date Rape, but does so in a sensitive way. The book was heart-tugging and I kept reading until I was done! The Sea Prayers is a part of a series, but it reads well as a Standalone. GREAT BOOK!

I fell in love with the broken imperfect characters in The Sea Prayers. A single mom full of fear and a recovering addict who feels unworthy of love. Add into the mix a wealthy villain and a partially renovated sailboat and you've got a story that compelled me to keep turning the pages. The storyline is so relevant for today. There is no glossing over things as the story unfolds. When I found myself feeling sympathetic toward the villain I knew Normandie was a master wordsmith. This is the fourth and I believe last in the Carolina Coast series. Characters from the other novels make appearances to help Alice and Henry reach their happily-ever-after. If you've not read the other five this one stands on its own. I recommend grabbing up the others and sail away on waves of wonderfully crafted stories.

A very captivating Book with strong characters who draw you in more & more as the Book progresses, it covers many emotional subjects in areas where they are still relevant and very much of the now, as they were several generations ago. It shows how awful things such as Date Rape can be overcome & with help & support make a person & their lives actually stronger in cases where the child from such a swift union of two people can bring a treasured love. I really enjoyed the whole Book

Never ending stories

I never want a good book to end. But good books by nature always leave you wanting more of the story. I guess that's what keeps me intrigued with Normandie's books. There's always more. More stories, more hope, more faith and triumph amidst the trials, more to look forward to until the next time when new characters emerge. She never disappoints! Can't wait for the next one, Normandie. Bravo!

This is the first book that I have read by Normandie Fischer, so I probably missed a little bit with not reading the series in order. I was still able to enjoy this story of grace and forgiveness though! I loved the characters, Agnes and Henry, and the heartache that they both live with. When Agnes' quiet life is thrown into a tailspin by the same man who raped her years before, she must figure out how to find peace and joy in a broken mess.
I thought that the author did a wonderful job with some difficult subjects. The characters are well written, and I promptly had to pick up another of her books! This is a wonderful book to pick up for high school on up.

This was my first book in this series to read, and it was easy to read as a standalone story.

This story is a very "in your face" type of story that deals with the aftereffects of date rape. I have to say there were pieces of this story that I imagine are comparable to what we see in the tabloids with entertainers who seem to think they're above the law. While I'm a huge fan of Christian stories covering the hard topics, there were parts of this story that were just a bit much for me. I think the author was trying to give an insight to the reader as to how those who don't have the mind of Christ have thoughts that are not appropriate as well as those who ARE Christians can have thoughts that stray into areas that aren't the best. While I know there are people who will like these parts, they were a bit crass for my tastes.

Agnes is a single mom who is trying to survive the best she can without the support of any family. Her move to the little town Beaufort, NC plays a vital role in being surrounded by people who do want to support her. You can see God's hand moving as He brings people into her life as well as her daughter, Brisa's life at just the right time.

The man who drugged her when she was young has come wanting his daughter. Getting to know Darlington was incredibly hard knowing how selfish he was being. I was looking forward to him getting his comeuppance! As the story unfolds, he made me want to pull my hair out, and really had me trying to put myself in Brisa's position as a 12 year old. I really struggled with how she treated Agnes, but tried to understand her hurt.

Then there is Hen... Henry. I'm actually glad the author addresses his nickname in the story, because I couldn't stand it, especially when it was mentioned over and over. lol Imagine calling a guy, Hen. lol He also had his demons to deal with in regards to addiction and his somewhat new faith. I liked that he had someone speaking Truth to him through his struggles.

The ending wasn't what I was hoping for when it comes to Agnes and Hen's relationship, especially when she hasn't come to saving faith. Maybe it'll come up in future books?

*I received the ebook for review. This is my personal opinion.

This is a quiet emotional book about hurting people. It is thoughtful and well written. Even though it feels like it has been ripped out of recent headlines, the author told me that she has actually been working on it for some time. The author has a real talent for taken hurt and broken people and making them real and giving them room to grow in a believable way. To me the theme of this book is value. What do you value? How do you show what you value? Do you give yourself value by what other people think or by how you are as a person? Can you extend or receive forgiveness to show just how valuable you are? I have read several of the other books in the series, but they really do stand alone. If this is your first introduction to this author, you will want to read her other books as well.

Brisa is the light of Agnes' life; the joy and delight of her heart. And also the result of the night she sneaked out as a teen to a nightclub. One drug dropped in her drink by one very famous and handsome man, and the next morning Agnes awakens discovering she was sexually assaulted...and not too long after that, that she is pregnant. Agnes hasn't told Brisa the circumstances of her conception. Especially as Brisa often listens to her mystery dad's CDs...unknowingly. For all these years, Agnes has carried around that secret and its pain, along with the utter adoration she feels toward her daughter.

Brisa is now 12. Agnes is a waitress in author Normandie Fischer's small Southern town of Beaufort, in a restaurant known for its chefs and their unique cuisine. Henry is an assistant chef with pain in his own past; neglect and abuse in his childhood plus the path of recovery he's walking after his lost years of addiction. He is slowly falling for Agnes...but his own fears have kept him from pursuing her.

And also, there's the famous singer Darlington; the one who has discovered that he has a daughter out there who looks JUST like him. He's certain that he can get Brisa (whom he's never met) away from Agnes. It'll just take a little payoff to her waitress mom, right? Then he can bring her into his own luxurious world of wealth and fame. He can offer Brisa SO MUCH MORE.

But Agnes will never, ever give up her daughter. And there is a community of friends in Beaufort who will do everything they can to keep Brisa with her mom--even up against Darlington's money and connections.

There's also the matter of faith. The God who's perceived by Agnes as One who abandoned her; by Henry as One who's left him to do things on his own; and by Darlington as Someone who's so far in his rearview mirror that he might not even recognize Him. But this situation is bigger than these 3, and bigger than their own beliefs. And the people of Beaufort? They're praying people.

Don't miss this lovely, honest, heartfelt book in the Carolina Coast Stories. Normandie Fischer's books tell stories that are both hard and broken. But they also have so much beauty, and the revelation of a loving and powerful God. I definitely recommend The Sea Prayers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

HOLY MOLY! This author have done READ MY MAIL!! I identified with so many elements in this story!
I don’t even know where to begin this review! The depth of spiritual truth, unraveling years unforgiveness, addiction and its aftermath, assault and its aftermath, the unbound freedom of worship, the precious cost of fame and fortune.
This reader could almost tangibly feel Agnes’ sense of—no, lack of—self-worth. (too many years…) An outsider in a close community, she is welcomed and embraced by neighbors, and by mothers of Brisa’s friends.
Brisa, those dangling preteen years. All of them spent without a father, or any other family for that matter.
Henry. Precious, adorable Henry. Battling demons and yet a heart of gold.
Becca! I adored her. Faith and joy that walks in a room with her. A faith of such confidence and substance. Well, and Mama Bea. Kindred souls, those two. Clinging to roots and family, and to God’s Spirit.
Darling. Caught up in a lifestyle not of his own making. Living the dream, and yet not loving it.
Ms. Fischer writes characters with such depth, such humanity, such authenticity, I felt as though they might ring my doorbell at any moment.
The author’s style is delightful—even in telling the more sordid bits. Like friends chatting over tea. Reading a story by Ms. Fischer is a treat, even when—especially when—the subject matter is not. I appreciate her honesty in presenting the uglier side of life, while not drawing the reader into its dark depths.
I’ve not read any by Ms. Fischer before but I can guarantee you that I surely will! I'd give this story a dozen feathers! Fifty! A hundred!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, Normandie Fischer. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

***

This is the first book by Normandie Fischer that I have read and I am sure it will not be the last. The Sea Prayers is a beautifully written book about seeking forgiveness, giving forgiveness and ultimately – forgiving yourself.

The story has touched on the effects of addiction, “burying” sexual harassment, teenage pregnancy and getting lost in the extravagance of fame and popularity. All these topics are so relevant in today’s life as we struggle with facing them. One line from the book that got my attention is from a bible verse – “In everything, give thanks”. Not for everything! And this was a reminder that no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in - we not giving thanks for those circumstances - but we need to give thanks even in those circumstances, despite the heartache and fear.

Powerful message of forgiveness in this book. Beautifully written. Great read. Thank you Normandie.

The Sea Prayers.

This book is hard to review because it had me on a roller coaster. It’s one of the few books in recent memory that I had to put down it down and pick up again later when I was in a different frame of mind.

Is it a good book? Unequivocally yes. Can it be hard to read? Yes.

The Sea Prayers by Normandie Fischer deals with some deep issues and is not something to read if you are looking for light and fluffy. She tackles tough subjects head on and doesn’t mix words. Which I appreciate, since I think too often, we tend to sugar coat things, and that is NOT what we are supposed to do.

Normandie Fischer interwove so many emotional tugs in this book, along with themes of forgiveness, second chances, and overcoming the odds.

I deeply enjoyed Normandie Fischer’s writing style, and I think fans of T.I.Lowe, and Beth Troy will definitely enjoy this book (and the whole Carolina Coast series).

I received this book as an ARC and leave a voluntary review. This is the first book from Normandie Fischer that I read (however not the last) and I absolutely loved it. It follows the story of Agnes, who as a young girl got pregnant after being raped when her drink was spike. Years later the father of her daughter made contact and then Brisa started to explore a relationship with her father. Agnes is a waitress struggling to make ends meet while giving her daughter the loving upbringing she never had. Her friendship with Henry grew but he also struggled with his own demons and to overcome his addiction. His love for her and Brisa however made him realize that he needs to act in certain situations and cannot hide away from the real world. Darlington, Brisa's father, also made a turnabout in his life for the good and they're able to work out the future together. A very good and inspiring read.

The Sea Prayers evoked so many emotions that tugged at my heart... feelings of fear, anger, loss and love. This heartwarming, heartbreaking story centers around 12 year old Brisa who escapes out her window one night and runs away to be with her Mega Star Daddy she never knew. Left behind is her terrified Mom Agnes, who had kept the dark secret of her birth that resulted from date rape. Left behind is Link her faithful dog who won't eat or leave Brisa's bed, she is his person,,, his woeful body totally bereft, he brought tears to my eyes. Henry a recovering addict that has a past of his own that keeps him hostage, and trying to deny his feeling for Agnes. Darling, the father whose surprises are many. Each character is so richly developed, and told from their own perspective that it made me feel their struggles so intimately. A beautiful relatable story of the power of letting go, change, courage, finding God and forgiveness in ones own heart, I highly recommend it!

The Sea Prayers- a story about friendship, faith, love, hurt, anger, redemption, healing and forgiveness! This was a powerful and beautiful story!! You will find yourself smiling, crying, and shocked throughout each chapter. Agnes and her daughter, Brisa’s relationship is full of love. But is tested big time, when the famous man who fathered, Brisa comes into their lives, unexpectedly. Agnes tried to protect her young daughter from knowing about how she was conceived and wanted nothing to do with Darlington (Brisa’s dad). But things take an ugly turn and Agnes finds herself fearful for her daughter and the world she was thrown into. There are also many friendships throughout the story that tell of God’s love and mercy! This was a wonderful story!!

Normandie Fischer's books were recommended to me by a good friend of mine.

This is the first novel that I've read and it has captivated me. She crawls into the minds of her characters and describes their whole being so well you feel as if you know them. The emotions in the book were handled with sensitive care as several of the characters are dealing with scars from their past.

It's simply beautiful.

Good Southern fiction. In Sea Prayers, we meet another character from Beaufort, a single mom trying to raise her daughter while hiding the identity and existence of the girl's famous father. I especially enjoyed Darling's transformation from manipulative self-centered jerk to a man who earnestly desires to be a real dad to his daughter.
Always enjoy Normandie Fischer's writing and had a hard time putting this one down.
