And here we are. The pivot point where this story turns, the balance point of my sins, the advent of the man who spread a shadow over the rest of my life.

I don’t want to talk about him. I don’t want to invoke his name. It feels like summoning the devil.

My adored mom recommended this book to me, as she said it was unputdownable. I was thrilled to ‘listen’ to it, and found the storyline to be very intriguing and my interest never wavered.

Honestly I don’t know what category to place this in. Women’s fiction would probably make the most sense. There is a bit of mystery, a bit of romance and definitely drama revolving around a mother, her daughter and her parents.

I went in totally blind and really enjoyed, but please be aware physical abuse, and the decisions made because of the horrendous acts, is front and center within this storyline. There are characters to love and those to completely detest, which lends itself to a range of emotions.

This was my first read by this author and was quite impressed!

3.5 stars

I'm kinda on the fence about whether this is a 3 star or 3.5 star read but since it did hold my interest I will round up. Maisey receives a phone call that her mom is in a coma and her father might be charged with abuse and neglect. She races to her childhood home in Washington with her daughter and attempts to figure out what the heck is going on and why her father was trying to destroy family records. As Maisey digs around for answers she discovers she has a long lost sister.

Like I said before the book held my interest but I can't say it was the most satisfying read. I hate to say that because the author did attempt to tackle a serious subject but I think the execution was slightly off. The first half of the book worked better than the second half because you are curious about what secrets Maisey's mother is hiding. By the time everything is revealed it almost feels underwhelming. There were parts of the story that I thought were underdeveloped towards the end. I thought the introduction of Tony and his family didn't feel natural although at least there was an interesting backstory there.

I think the best way to describe this book is it feels like a Lifetime Channel movie. The plot is interesting enough for you to watch, or in this case read, over the course of an afternoon, but it really isn't anything you haven't seen before. I do think some people will connect more with this book than others given the subject matter that is more of a theme in the second half of the book. Overall, it was a decent selection for my free Amazon Kindle First ebook.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 / 5 rounded up.

When I first started Whisper Me This by Kerry Anne King I was speeding through it and expected to really like it, unfortunately it ended up falling a little short of the mark for me.

In Whisper Me This Maisey has never quite lived up to her mother's expectations. She has held a series of dead-end jobs, and has never gotten married - two things that her mom desperately wanted for her to change. When Maisey finds out her mom is in a coma and her dad might be charged with abuse and neglect, she goes back to her childhood home with her daughter Elle and must come to terms with her confused father, what to do about her mom, and what she feels are her own shortcomings and failures.

There is a mystery theme in this book that kept me reading and turning pages. The book switched between Leah's journal (Maisey's mom), Maisey, and a love interest for Maisey - Tony. Tony is holding onto his own guilt and secrets, as well as Maisey finding out she has a sister that her mom made her believe was a figment of her imagination. Slowly the story unravels, both the story of Maisey's mom and Tony's story, and it was definitely a slow burner of a story overall.

The biggest thing for me was that I wasn't a huge fan of Maisey and didn't really find myself rooting for her, at least not at first. She seemed incredibly flighty and childlike - even though she has a 12 year old daughter she is supposed to be raising - but we find out there is a reason for the way she acts. I did think she redeems herself towards the end, even though I wanted to smack her over the head a few times to stand up for herself. I think this was a pretty realistic description though so you can't really be mad at her too much. She is dealing with some pretty tough sh*t in this book.

Which brings me to the next thing, so many trigger warnings for this book and they all deal with abuse. Verbal abuse, physical abuse, etc. all directed at females or children. I have to admit it was a pretty tough book to read even though the author tries to infuse hope into it. The end is more uplifting than the majority of the book, and I found myself in tears more than once. Just know it is a very tough read despite the hopeful bits.

Final Thought: There was just something about this book that didn't sit quite right with me, but hell if I can articulate what it is. The mysteries that unravel just produce even more pain, and although I felt slightly better at the ending, the overall feel of this novel was pretty melancholy to me. Well written, but read at your own risk! I think I just found it too sad and frustrating, but that's just me and other people will probably really like this book and the message it delivers.

For Pete's sake.

I knew this book was about all sorts and types of domestic violence. I once upon a time lived through several abusive relationships, so I wanted to see how this book handled it. (It was a free book, thank heavens.)

Major issues.

1) Do NOT have a character come to bury her mother, take care of a father with the beginning states of dementia, and by day two talk about your tingly bits feeling something for someone you just met a day ago. Girl, you're crazy.

2) Do not allow your 12-year old, however precocious, to know too much. Or for that matter, be the only one with a grain of common sense. Just don't. That's not what kids are for. Find a therapist.

3) ONE Google search. Just ONE, and you found a long lost family member? GTFOH. I can't get that kind of result looking for a decent restaurant. Convenient. And stupid. Lost respect for your storytelling there.

4) Since the new-found family member is a bit of a star (ie, has money to get the hell out of Dodge), DO IT. This particular character is no shrinking violet, is surrounded by big burly guys in her payroll....just head for Nashvile, do not pass go, do not play in any more Thai restaurants. Speaking of which, Thai and Country Western? I'll take my Pad Thai to go. Good lord.

The book got two stars because I got hooked it a particular storyline and had to figure it out, which I did, as it was a bit trite. I also enjoyed some of the smart-assery the main character do it out.

Do not read this.

Whisper Me This was a solid 4 stars for me. An interesting book that centers around a woman named Maisey-who heads to her childhood home after discovering her mom is in the hospital and her dad is in a serious confused mental state. Maisey has much to contend with, including uncovering a family secret that will change her life forever. The big secret wasn’t all that shocking and the book was somewhat slower paced than I liked, but I would still highly recommend it to readers that like fictional slice of life type of books.

I listened to the Amazon audible version of “Whisper Me This” by Kerry Anne King, narrated by Teri Clark Linden. OK, is Ms. Linden the voice of Siri? Seriously, I thought I was listening to Siri telling me a story in her robotic voice. It was a bit distracting. I’d get used to her voice after 30 or so minutes and then have to do it all over again when I picked up the story again. Her range did change for different characters, but that robotic voice……

Now that I got that over, the story is an interesting one about family secrets and domestic violence. All characters in the novel are touched by domestic violence.

The main character, Maisy, is annoying as a character. She floats along, not making decisions, allowing the father of her child to bully her. Her child, Elle, has more sense than she does. Maisy is a helpless woman who works temp jobs, doesn’t take responsibilities for her life. She’s an annoying character, who is dimwitted and distracting from the story.

Maisy is called home when a neighbor of her parents calls her after her mother is taken to the hospital and her father is behaving like he has dementia. Her parent’s situation is a big surprise to Maisy who seems to be clueless about everything in her life. Additionally, Maisy learns that she has a twin sister after her mother dies. She also learns that her father is not her biological father. There are great ideas and themes in the story, it’s the character of Maisy who makes this a dud.

Wimpy female characters annoy me to no end. I can’t recommend this. Big dud.

I guess this genre is just not my cup of tea. Reading this is a kin to watching a sappy Life-Time or Hallmark channel movie. The plot line was so predictable and the stereotypical characters where so one-dimensional and flat. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and eventually even grew to dislike them! Please, who would let the nosy neighbor make your mom's funeral arrangements? Who would go to a concert the evening prior, and then show up late to your own mom's funeral? And then sit there being bored and preoccupied during the funeral. The relationship between Maisey and daughter Elle was so not right. Putting your 12 year old into adult situations time after time, relying on a 12 year old as if they were an adult, letting a 12 year old call her own shots and yours. The mother daughter roles are reversed here. I also didn't enjoy the many slams and put downs on Christianity. Everything about this book was just, for me, out of whack! Overall I found it hard to swallow, I just couldn't buy into the characters. I read this because it was free and the description sounded like it could have been really good.

Kerry Anne King writes with such insight and compassion for human nature, and her latest novel, WHISPER ME THIS, is no exception. The families on which the story centers have secrets they’ve kept through the years out of concern for the damage that might be done if they were exposed. But in the end as the families’ lives become intertwined and their secrets come inevitably to light, what is revealed to be the most riveting heart of this book are the gut wrenching choices that were made in terrifying circumstances. One such choice haunted a mother throughout her lifetime and left behind a legacy of mistrust and confusion and a near unsolvable mystery. Following the clues is an act of faith that sometimes wavers. There’s no guaranty the end will tie up in a neat bow, but the courage of the human spirit, its ability to heal, is persistent and luminous throughout the pages of this very real and emotive story. I loved it.

My favorite books are those that make me think, and feel; books that tackle a difficult subject...abusive relationships in this book...without pulling punches, but leaving me hopeful in the end. Kerry Anne King has written this spectacular story, one which left me in tears, feeling all of the emotions...fear, anger, love, pain, desperation, strength, grief, courage. I felt like I was right in the room with the characters; flesh and blood characters who were complicated and complex; I was suffering along with them and cheering their victories. This book is a triumph; thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, and incredibly moving.

“Whisper Me This” by Kerry Anne King, is a thought-provoking, intriguing, intense and emotional read. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and Mystery. Kudos to Kerry Anne King for discussing issues of physical and emotional abuse and how it affects others. In this novel, the author not only describes a woman’s point of view, but shows the men’s reaction as well. The author writes about the importance of family, mother-daughter relationships, emotional support, honesty, love and hope. This is also a novel where the characters have many dark secrets. The timeline is in the present and goes back to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the stories.

The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. As deep, dark secrets start to unravel, single mom. Maisey Addington finds that her world as she knows it will change forever. Maisey has a strong connection to her young daughter Elle, and would do anything to protect her. A phone call brings Maisey and Elle back to her hometown where her mother is in a coma, and it looks like her frail Dad might be responsible for it. Someone is responsible for older fractures and broken bones that Maisey’s Mom has.

When Maisey was a child, she would have an imaginary friend named Marley. Whenever Maisey would mention Marley’s name, her mother would go into quite a fury. Now it seems, that there really is a Marley, Maisey’s twin sister. Maisey becomes obsessed in finding her sister, and could be in danger. I would recommend this captivating story to readers that enjoy a thought-provoking, and suspenseful novel. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

Rich in emotions and characters, WHISPER ME THIS is a stunning tale of dark secrets, broken memories, and ultimately hope and resilience. The novel quickly pulls the reader onto a roller-coaster ride through grief, mystery, and cryptic journal entries. At the heart of the story is a twelve-year-old with more sense than most adults, and her mother, Maisey, who discovers the power of her voice and the courage to fight for her destiny. I can't recommend this book enough. A perfect book club pick!

Whisper Me This is an incredible emotional drama with generations of unspeakable secrets, fragmented memories, lies, deep grief, fear and yet love and hope. Maisey is brought suddenly back home with her 13 year old daughter Elle to deal with her dying mother and father who appears to be in an unbalanced state of mind. This story is written with such compassion, and relatable characters your heart just aches for, and others so horrible you want to do then in. There are journal pages that give clues to the old mysteries, and add heart pounding moments to the story as it enfolds with moments of indecision, and suspicion. I fell in love with Elle, for her wisdom and courage; she was her Mom's best support. Haunting memories that were squelched for Maisey when she mentioned her imaginary friend Marley when she was a little child kept reappearing as nightmares as she goes through her present day. A book I devoured from the first pages, I keep seeing these characters in my mind, you don't want to miss reading this one!

Whisper me This has been on my TBR shelf for a while and due to COVID I'm attempting to whittle down that list. I'm so glad that I am because this book is fantastic! Perfectly written characters, this is a story of family lies, abuse, the effects of generational abuse and how these characters helped one another overcome it all - a mighty task! I love every single page of this book and highly recommend it and this author.

I chose WHISPER TO ME for my July free Amazon Prime book and probably wouldn’t have read it otherwise. I tried not to let that affect my review.

At its heart, WHISPER TO ME is about domestic violence, how it affects the victims and children, as well as the choices those children make when they become adults.

Maisey’s mother may not have technically been abusive, but she suffered the trauma of an emotionally abused child and carries that with her into adulthood. Most of the characters are wounded in some way by abuse or neglect.

WHISPER TO ME held my interest, but wasn’t particularly memorable.

Maisley Addington is a single mother in a dependent relationship with her 12 year old daughter. She allows her 12 year old to be the adult in the relationship-never shielding her from adult truths she has no business being a part of.

The book is dumb. The characters are one dimensional. It's too overwritten and overdramatic.

It was smug writing. Almost self congratulatory without saying it.

It was ridiculously dumb.

This book was not what I expected it to be, nor was it what I was in the mood for at the moment. I picked it up thinking it was a suspense or a thriller, but I wouldn't say it was either of these things. What it is is a domestic drama about family secrets and a cycle of abuse.

On the good side, the descriptions of trauma and its aftermath are good. This book doesn't shy away from dissecting the ugliness of learning how to break free and recover from abusive relationships. I really appreciated this nuanced view, and that it was integral to the characters and not just window-dressing to make them more sympathetic.

However, while there are good messages here, I found Maisey's mother appalling. She's abusive too, but that's glossed over and never addressed in the book, and this really bothered me.

To me, Maisey was also a terrible character. She came across as unstable and flighty, and I kept wondering how she'd managed to raise a child to the age of twelve without burning the house down or getting either or both of them killed. Maisey seemed to be trapped in a stunted adolescence, and I didn't think she showed any real growth by the end of the book.

In addition, I didn't find the big family secret to be all that well done or all that intriguing, and the reconciliation was too neat, like an after school special. I could also have done without the romance.

Insufferable protagonist with insufferable child stumble through an insipid plot.

This novel was marketed as a thriller/mystery, it is vehemently neither. I think the author was trying to write a self-help book cleverly disguised as a story. *SPOILER* IT DIDN'T WORK. About as subtle as an issue of 'O' magazine and just as treacly.

I should know better than to read Amazon's free books.

Kind of mixed feeling while reading this book. I have read faster than I thought despite the slow-paced storyline.
It's about domestic violence & family problems. More on fiction, not mystery.

WARNING: This book contains extreme triggers for people who have suffered abuse. The description provided does not adequately emphasize the central role of severe domestic violence that this story contains. If you have a history of abuse, proceed with caution.

I felt it was imperative to post the above warning because I found it exceedingly difficult to finish this book. By the time I was about three-fourths of the way through it, I had to take medication to prevent an anxiety attack. I don't think I really need to say anything else. I should not have continued to read this book, but in cases like this, sometimes I want to see it through to the end.

I don't think that the romantic partner the main character, Maisey, chooses is the right choice for her. She Maisey would have been much better off with someone who came from a family with absolutely no history of abuse. I say this from personal experience. You can get support from a therapist. You need a partner who is a steadying influence, not someone who is falling apart. Tony is depicted as someone who was so traumatized by abuse that his worst fear was becoming an abuser. He had counseling when he was a child, but there is nothing to indicate that he was undergoing counseling during the period of the novel, even though he was having flashbacks and nightmares and insomnia. In my opinion, Tony is at a high risk for becoming the thing he most fears, simply because he has not dealt with his past. One cathartic moment is not enough. He should be in ongoing therapy, possibly for the rest of his life. And he should wait until he is in a much more stable mental condition before even considering a romantic relationship.

I realize the author has worked in the mental health field. I have no idea of her personal background, or whether she has dealt with abuse in her own life. The above is my opinion based on my own experiences. This book has taught me to read the descriptions carefully, and to read between the lines if necessary. Err on the side of caution. Stop at the first sign of a trigger. Next time, I will.

I'm trying to read more mystery books this year, and I'm so happy that I had the chance to read this book!

I really loved the story but just a fair warning, it talked about domestic violence/abusive relationships.

The story revolved on Maisey; her personal struggles with the father of her child, the death of her mother, and an investigation against her father who's showing early signs of dementia.

I admired how this book shown such strong female characters. I loved how Maisey and Leah did everything that they could to survive an abusive relationship and protect their child. Even Maisey's daughter, Elle, who's just a 12-year old girl seemed wise beyond her years.

Aside from these amazing characters, I got hooked with the story as well. Lots of family secrets were revealed as you go through the chapters which made this unputdownable! This was an intense and emotional read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for providing me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

“But I am not brave, and I have never been strong enough to carry the weight of my mother’s ambitions and expectations, to bear the brunt of her obsessive love.”

“I keep waiting for some great life purpose to rise up in front of me and declare itself, but I don’t seem to be wired for greatness.”

“His anger is not my fault. I am not responsible for his behavior, then or now.”

"I hear forgiveness in all these things, and love, and I'm able to let go of this moment and take a step toward the rest of my life."

"It's funny how life spins, how we go on for long stretches of time and nothing changes, and then all at once, in a single moment, everything is altered."

Family drama and a bit of mystery as Maisey learns secrets and lies after she is called back to her childhood home. I loved Elle and Tony, Mia and the Dad. I also loved a few supporting characters that pop up later in the book. I like how the secrets flow out slowly as realization of Maisey's current life also come into focus. It's a good story, one that pulled at my heart and gave me the happy end I was hoping for.

Lovely cover, too.
