Service on the Board of Directors

The AAIDD Board of Directors is elected by its members. Each year AAIDD asks its members for nominations. Self-nominations are welcomed. The Board meets monthly on conference call and face-to-face twice a year.



Board Positions

Membership in AAIDD is required for service on the AAIDD Board. 
Positions to be filled this year are:

Vice President 

Nominations Sought Annually, Total term: 4 years
Candidates must be Fellows of the Association

The Vice President serves for one year in each of the following roles: Vice President, President-Elect, President and Past President. The Vice President serves as primary liaison between the professional entities of the Association and the Board of Directors.

Member-at-Large

Nominations Sought Annually; Term: 4 years
Candidates must be members of the Association

At-Large Board Members serve on and attend all meetings of the Board and their assigned Committee(s), actively participate in discussions, complete assignments, and support the recommendations of Committees before the Board of Directors. 

2023-24 Nomination Timeline


September 1: 
Call for Nominations Opens

October 2: Call for Nominations Closes

October 10: Nominees are contacted

October 30:  Nominees submit leadership profile

Late November: N&E Committee meets to review nominations

Mid-December:  Nominees are notified of the disposition

January 6: Candidates submit their ballot information

January 9:   Ballot Opens

February 9: Ballot Closes

Mid-February:  Election Results are announced

Do you have to be member of AAIDD to serve on the Board?

Yes. Service on the Board is limited to members of the Association. Nominees who are not members of the Association will not be considered for the AAIDD Board.

How long must you be a member of AAIDD before you can serve on the Board?
Although there is no minimum membership requirement to serve, nominees who (a) join the AAIDD immediately prior to their nomination or (b) have not participated in the affairs of the Association will not be seriously considered.

Some examples of participation in the affairs of the Association are: serving on a committee, serving in a leadership role of an Interest Network or Chapter, serving as a reviewer for journal articles or conference abstracts, delivering a webinar or conference presentation, and being published in an AAIDD publication.
