This annual conference kick-off reception is not to be missed. Compete in a trivia competition, play games, fill in giant coloring sheets, and win prizes! Appetizers will be served and there will be a no-host bar.
If you're a new WLA member or this is your first time attending the conference, come meet WLA leadership, staff, and other active members. Join Washington State Librarian, Cindy Aden, and special guests in a playful trip down memory lane. Hear about how our State Library has been WLA’s partner since its very beginning (we have the photos to prove it!), and enjoy tales of bygone days. Learn about current collaborations and our hopes for the future. Tomorrow’s libraries are full of exciting possibilities thanks to our rich history! Continental breakfast provided.

 Lunch & Keynote with Attorney General Bob Ferguson

WLA is excited to welcome WA’s Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, who believes in the great importance of libraries in our state and nation. Ferguson will talk with us about the issues surrounding net neutrality, including how the Attorney General’s Office challenged the FCC decision to rescind net neutrality rules. One of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2017, Ferguson made national headlines after successfully blocking President Trump’s first executive order barring travel from seven Muslim-majority nations. He looks forward to this event and will allow for questions following his presentation.

 Resilience Film Screening
5:15–7:00 pm
Resilience is a new documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and explores how we are all impacted by trauma and toxic stress. The long-lasting effects of trauma are apparent daily in schools and libraries. Join Seattle-based nonprofit Sound Discipline for the film screening, followed by a short presentation and Q & A. How can library staff act as a buffer and mitigate the impacts of trauma and toxic stress, and even help build resilience in our communities and schools? Sound Discipline has been supporting schools, communities, and families with trauma-informed practices to build resilience for 10 years. Light snacks will be provided.

WLA Brewery & Winery Crawl
6:30–8:00 pm
Yakima is an agricultural community with a vibrant and growing city center that features some excellent craft breweries and wine tasting rooms that feature locally grown hops and grapes. Join us on a crawl through downtown Yakima where we will visit wine tasting rooms and local craft beer pubs. Collect a stamp at each stop on the crawl, and turn in your full map to get entered into a raffle!

 The Last Solinus
8:00–9:00 pm
For over half a century the Society Gaius Julius Solinus (v. Washingtonius), the nation's only quasi-official (We have an attached seal. So fuzzy!) library humor society has met once a year at WLA to poke gentle fun at the profession. For our finale we'll be reprising classics (including a possible HMS Rights for All) from past years.

5th Annual WLA 5k Scholarship Fund Run and Yoga
6:30–8:15 am
The 5th Annual Fund the Future 5K Run will take you through one of Yakima’s beautiful and historical street. The route will take you down Naches Avenue which it is said to have been fashioned after Berlin's famous Unter den Linden. Or perhaps you may encounter the Woman in Black who haunted residents in 1897 down this very street.
Worried about meeting the Woman in Black? Then try Yoga! We will have David Lynx instruct a 50 minute yoga class. Not only is David certified in Primordial Sound Meditation, Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga, and Perfect Health, he is also YVC’s Larson Art Gallery Director.

CAYAS Author Breakfast with Mitali Perkins

Mitali Perkins has written ten novels for young readers, including You Bring the Distant Near (nominated for the National Book Award, Walter Award honor book), Rickshaw Girl (chosen by the New York Public Library as one of the top 100 books for children in the past 100 years), Bamboo People (American Library Association's Top Ten Novels for Young Adults), and Tiger Boy (winner of the Charlotte Huck Honor Award and the South Asia Book Award). She has been honored as a "Most Engaging Author" by independent booksellers across the country and selected as a "Literary Light for Children" by the Associates of the Boston Public Library. Mitali was born in Kolkata, India, before immigrating to the United States. She has lived in Bangladesh, India, England, Thailand, Mexico, Cameroon, and Ghana, studied at Stanford and U.C. Berkeley, and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Saturday Morning Keynote with Ijeoma Oluo

Ijeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based writer, speaker, and Internet Yeller. She’s the author of the New York Times Best-Seller So You Want to Talk about Race, published in January by Seal Press. Named one of the The Root’s 100 Most Influential African Americans in 2017, one of the Most Influential People in Seattle by Seattle Magazine, one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Seattle by Seattle Met, and winner of the of the 2018 Feminist Humanist Award by the American Humanist Society, Oluo’s work focuses primarily on issues of race and identity, feminism, social and mental health, social justice, the arts, and personal essay. Her writing has been featured in The Washington Post, NBC News, Elle Magazine, TIME, The Stranger, and the Guardian, among other outlets.

 For the Love of Libraries: Lunch & Keynote with Dan Gemeinhart

Dan Gemeinhart is a life-long lover of libraries. From a childhood spent checking out stacks of books from the bookmobile, to a career as a K-5 teacher-librarian, and now as an author visiting libraries, he knows first-hand how powerful and vital libraries are to our communities, schools, and society. He will trace his long relationship with libraries and make the case for why libraries and librarians are more essential and valuable now than ever.

Yakima has some interesting geology, wildlife, and nature to enjoy! Fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy a guided hike with a Cowiche Canyon Conservancy volunteer hiking guide. The Conservancy owns 5,000 acres and has over 30 miles of trail. Two free hikes have been planned for conference attendants. So if you were planning on leaving the conference early consider staying to enjoy one or both hikes and discover more of the Yakima Valley! Meet at the Weikel Trailhead.
